The disciples were traveling with Jesus
up to Jerusalem;
Jesus before them,
they were frightened,
and those who followed were also in awe.
Taking again the Twelve with him,
he began to tell them what would happen to him :
"Here we go up to Jerusalem.
The Son of Man will be delivered
to the chief priests and scribes,
they will condemn him to death, shall deliver him to the Gentiles,
they will laugh at him, they spit on him,
they flog and kill,
and three days later he will rise again. "
Jacques and John, the son of Zebedee,
came to Jesus and say:
" Teacher, we want you to fulfill our request. "
He said:
" What would you have me do for you? "
They replied
" Grant us to sit,
one at your right and the other on thy left,
in your glory. "
Jesus said unto them
" You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the cup that I drink,
receive baptism in which I'll be dipped? "
They told him:" We can. "
He replied:
"The cup that I drink, you drink;
and baptism in which I'll be dipped,
you will receive.
but to sit at my right or my left
is not mine to grant,
there are those for whom these places are prepared. "
The other ten had heard, and they
indignant against Jacques and John.
Jesus called and said
"You know: those we look
as the gentiles
lord it;
their great ones make their authority felt.
Among you there must not be so.
Whoever wants to become great will be your servant.
Whoever wants to be first must be slave of all:
for the Son of man came not to be served
but to serve,
and give his life ransom for many. "
Jesus invites them to vote for him to engage in its wake. By offering the cup to which he will drink himself, Jesus remains in line with its announcement of the Passion. In the Old Testament, the "cut" in fact means a future of suffering, and the disciples did not know not. When he answered "we can", they say so boldly that they will follow Jesus to the end, even in suffering, to reach their goals. The story is on this very ironic. Not only abandon all the apostles Jesus, the two brothers as the others, but those who accompany him in his sufferings, to sit at his right and left, will not be two disciples but two robbers. One point the way to true greatness by recognizing his sin and be saved by letting Jesus "Lord remember me in your kingdom." "Today thou shalt be with me in paradise. " the ui Jesus said. And we, what are we looking for? ... The path of honor or that of Jesus, what is the object of our gaze? Jesus ... where we own? ... Watch Jesus, let us save it and open ourselves to follow him to others and their property. We look at ourselves, that we confine our selfishness and our contradictions! Is what we put at the service of Jesus and the other for them or for us ... So many questions for us indeed.
